Tekla Structures is one of the most capable and advanced software in this field, but on the other hand, that makes it also a little more complicated because it has more tools, settings, possibilities, and opportunities for customization. To make it easier for you, here are 11 ideas on how you can upgrade your Tekla Structure skills to get it going smoother:
Tekla Campus is the very right place to start your journey. Its whole purpose is to help students to learn Tekla Structures. But even if you are not a student, you can use this opportunity to learn. You can take some free Tekla classes here https://campus.tekla.com/learn. Watch videos and practice the things that you have learned. This is quite a good start to learn the very basics, but there are not too many content videos created yet.
You can download the latest educational version of Tekla Structures software here https://campus.tekla.com/download. You need only to create your free Trimble identity account and keep in mind a couple of education version limitations (otherwise, it`s exactly like a full version of Tekla Structures):
- The free student license is valid for four months. After that, you have to update it (it`s again free).
- Models created or saved with Tekla Structures Learning version are educational models. They cannot be opened with commercial configurations of Tekla Structures anymore.
- Drawings created or saved with Tekla Structures Learning version displays a watermark on drawings.
2. LEARN BY DOING
When you have Tekla Structures software on your computer and elementary knowledge of the very basics, it’s a good idea to continue exploring the software more. Although hands-on by trying and doing yourself is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to learn anything, it’s also a very slow method. Often, we don`t have that much time, and our employee’s man-hours are very expensive.
3. CLASSROOM TRAINING
A much faster and more effective way is to order training from experts, who can also bring out the best practices to use the software. For example, basic training is about 4-5 days long. It should be enough to start using Tekla Structures suitably. I would recommend going through the very basics (g., campus training) by yourself beforehand, so trainees already have some overview. With an overview of knowledge, they don`t have to concentrate so much on very easy things anymore, and they already have some questions. Also, give some prior background information about your company to your trainer and clients so that the training could be customized according to your needs. You can find our Tekla Structures trainings here https://www.tsguide.eu/tekla-training-courses/ . You can find Tekla software resellers, who can also often offer trainings, here https://www.tekla.com/contact/offices-and-resellers
4. ONLINE COURSES
Online courses are normally cheaper than classroom training, and trainees can take their lessons whenever and wherever they want in their own base. It`s a ready-made standard content, and there is no possibility to customize it according to your needs or interact live with a trainer and ask questions. It`s especially useful when you don`t have any trainer available near to you or when a new employee will come and there is no one to give him/her the basic training. Trimble has a pilot project of online e-learning course, but unfortunately, only some areas have the opportunity to order this course. You can ask for more information and your access to here https://elearning.tekla.com from your area reseller, but we are also in the process to create Tekla Structures online courses.
5. TEKLA SUPPORT VIDEOS
Apart from Tekla Campus lessons, there are also more than 60 useful tutorial/support videos available to watch here https://teklastructures.support.tekla.com/videos. It`s not too much, but it`s better than nothing.
6. TEKLA WEBINARS
You can watch the recorded webinars here https://www.tekla.com/about/webinars. Trimble has mostly two different types of webinars:
Case studies with clients about the best practices that you can put into use in your own company as well. Normally, it`s not so much tutorial-style about how to use the software.
What`s new in the new-version types of webinars that show more Tekla software itself and how to use it, but there, they show only the new or improved features, and you need to get your base knowledge from somewhere else. These webinars normally come twice a year with a new version.
7. YOUTUBE VIDEOS
If you type “Tekla Structures” on YouTube, you will get ~27 800 videos. There are videos in different languages (luckily most of them are in English). There are some longer demos, but most of them are just a few minutes long one-feature clips. The quality also varies. You just have to find the good ones. Here are some users that you could check out:

8. SOCIAL MEDIA
Follow Tekla Structures experts, whose full-time work is to help companies with Tekla Structures, on social media. They have seen from different companies the best practices and know what they are doing to give you the best value. Some of them also share useful tips and demo videos on social media from time to time. It`s all about giving value. e.g.:
Luckily, there are many other experienced Tekla Structure users. Especially, if you are a newbie, then other users can probably help you out with your problems (if they have time and wish to help you). You can also go around and read previous topics. This way you can find some answers to questions that you may have right now or in the future or just get some good ideas to put into use. Probably, many other users have been in a similar situation as you are now. The official Tekla Structures forum is here https://forum.tekla.com. It`s not the best place to start for the very beginners, but if you have questions then you just might find your answers from here.
10. TEKLA SUPPORT ARTICLES
Another place that I don`t recommend to start for very beginners are Tekla support articles. But one of my favorite place to find the answer to questions, after asking someone smarter, is to find it from Tekla support articles. The only thing is that you have to know what you are looking for and that`s why it`s more useful for advanced users who know what to look for because there is information about almost everything. Go and check it out for yourself here https://teklastructures.support.tekla.com/
11. LIVE EVENTS
Chosen Tekla Structure users get an invitation to Tekla User Days. Usually, they give their good overview, what`s new in the latest version, often add some presentations on how to increase productivity and get things done in a better way, or show use cases from real life on how different companies have done their projects successfully. If you are brave enough, then it`s a perfect opportunity to go and talk with other Tekla Structures users or even with the presenters and ask questions face to face.
