11 Ways to Improve Your Tekla Structures Skills

Tekla Structures is one of the most capable and advanced software in this field, but on the other hand, that makes it also a little more complicated because it has more tools, settings, possibilities, and opportunities for customization. Very much like with any other software, it`s possible to learn Tekla by yourself. However, with your first “learning” project you will most probably spend some time on learning the software and setting it up according to your company needs. To make it easier for you, here are 11 ideas on how you can upgrade your Tekla Structure skills to get it going smoother:

Tekla Structures configuration
Tekla Campus is the very right place to start your journey. Its whole purpose is to help students to learn Tekla Structures. But even if you are not a student, you can use this opportunity to learn. You can take some free Tekla classes here https://campus.tekla.com/learn. Watch videos and practice the things that you have learned. This is quite a good start to learn the very basics and continue your path. You can download the latest educational version of Tekla Structures software here https://campus.tekla.com/download. You need only to create your free Trimble identity account and keep in mind couple of education version limitations (otherwise, it`s exactly like a full version of Tekla Structures):

  • Free student license is for four months
  • Building information models created or saved with Tekla Structures Learning are educational models. They cannot be opened in commercial configurations of Tekla Structures.
  • Drawings created or saved with Tekla Structures Learning display a watermark stamp inscribed with Tekla Structures Educational text.

When you have Tekla Structures software on your computer and elementary knowledge of the very basics, it’s a good idea to continue exploring the software more. Although hands-on by trying and doing yourself is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to learn anything, it’s also a very slow method. Often, we don`t have that much time, and our employee’s man-hours are very expensive.

A much faster and more effective way is to order training from experts, who can also bring out the best practices to use the software. For example, basic training is about 4-5 days long. It should be enough to start using Tekla Structures suitably. I would recommend going through the very basics (g., campus training) by yourself beforehand, so trainees already have some overview. With an overview of knowledge, they don`t have to concentrate so much on very easy things anymore, and they already have some questions. Also, give some prior background information about your company to your trainer and clients so that the training could be customized according to your needs. You can find Tekla Structures resellers, who can also often offer training, here https://www.tekla.com/contact/offices-and-resellers

There is a pilot project of an online course where you can take the basic course online. It`s cheaper than classroom training, and trainees can take their lessons whenever and wherever they want in their own base. It`s a ready-made standard content, and there is no possibility to interact live with a trainer or ask questions. It`s especially useful when you don`t have any trainer available near to you or when a new employee will come and there is no one to give him/her the basic training. Unfortunately, only some areas have the opportunity to order this course. You can ask for more information and your access to here https://elearning.tekla.com from your area reseller.

Apart from Tekla Campus lessons, there are also more than 60 useful tutorial/support videos available to watch here https://teklastructures.support.tekla.com/videos. It`s not too much, but it`s better than nothing.

You can watch the recorded webinars here https://www.tekla.com/about/webinars. Trimble has mostly two different types of webinars:

  • Case studies with clients about the best practices that you can put into use in your own company as well. Normally, it`s not so much tutorial-style about how to use the software.
  • What`s new in the new-version types of webinars that show more Tekla software itself and how to use it, but there, they show only the new or improved features, and you need to get your base knowledge from somewhere else. These webinars normally come twice a year with a new version.

If you type “Tekla Structures” on YouTube, you will get ~27 800 videos. There are videos in different languages (luckily most of them are in English). There are some longer demos, but most of them are just a few minutes long, one-feature clips. The quality also varies. You just have to find the good ones. Here are some users that you could check out:

Follow Tekla Structures experts, whose full-time work is to help companies with Tekla Structures, on social media. They have seen from different companies the best practices and know what they are doing to give you the best value. Some of them also share useful tips and demo videos on social media from time to time. It`s all about giving value. g.:

Luckily, there are many other experienced Tekla Structure users. Especially, if you are a newbie, then other users can probably help you out with your problems (if they have time and wish to help you). You can also go around and read previous topics. This way you can find some answers to questions that you may have right now or in the future or just get some good ideas to put into use. Probably, many other users have been in a similar situation as you are now. The official Tekla Structures forum is here https://forum.tekla.com

Chosen Tekla Structure users get an invitation to Tekla User Days. Usually, they give their good overview, what`s new in the latest version, often add some presentations on how to increase productivity and get things done in a better way, or show use cases from real life on how different companies have done their projects successfully. If you are brave enough, then it`s a perfect opportunity to go and talk with other Tekla Structures users or even with the presenters and ask questions face to face.

When I need information about something, then my favorite place to find the answer after asking someone smarter is to find it from Tekla support articles. The only thing is that you have to know what you are looking for and that`s why it`s more useful for advanced users who know what to look for because there is information about almost everything.
